Deosai National Park - Diachronic Analysis of Water bodies and Wetlands

In the framework of the project “Improvement of Central Karakoram National Park Management System as Model for Mountain Ecosystems in Northern Pakistan”, basic and thematic cartography of the area of ​​Deosai National Park, in the province of Gilgit Baltistan in Pakistan has been realized. The project, funded by UNDP (United Nations Development Program), sees the participation of the UNICA – Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences of the University of Cagliari, in support of the activities of the EvK2-CNR Recognized Association, on two main themes: – Basic and thematic cartography of the area of ​​Deosai National Park, in the province of Gilgit Baltistan in Pakistan; – Update and reactivation of web publishing services of EvK2-SHAREGeoNetwork system data dedicated to data collected by high altitude stations (Himalaya – Karakorum) already present in the DB and to the data that will be collected in the field during this project. The laboratory activities that mainly concern the realignment of existing databases, satellite data processing and the development of a mobile application for data collection and sharing, will be accompanied by field surveys and by the support of local technicians with theoretical and practical training sessions for data collection and management of web sharing systems. The training activities will take place in the field and at the universities of Gilgit and Skardu, where days will be organized to involve local technicians and students.

Central Karakorum National Park (CKNP) Land Cover map

The Central Karakorum National Park (CKNP) is one of the most important national parks of Pakistan and comprises one of the largest mountain glacial systems in the world with Siachen (75 km), Baltoro (57 km) and Hispar-Biafo (122 km) glaciers originating within its boundaries. Administratively, it is situated in the Skardu and Gilgit districts of the Gilgit and Baltistan Region of Pakistan. The 72,500 km2 national park borders China, Afghanistan, and India, and represents one section of the of Hindu Kush-Karakorum-Himalaya mountain range. The area is part of the "transitional zone" between the arid Central Asia and the semi-humid subtropics of the northern South Asia. DInSAR mean deformation velocity map of the Napoli Bay area

Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) mean deformation velocity map (in colour) of the Napoli Bay area (South Italy), computed in coherent pixels, only, and superimposed on the SAR amplitude image (grey scale representation) of the zone. The map has been obtained by applying the Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) algorithm to a set of 64 data acquired along ascending orbits by the SAR system mounted on-board the ENVISAT satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA) during the 2003-2010 time period. Note that the red colour corresponds to a sensor-target range increase; moreover, all the DInSAR measurements (that provide a measurement of the ground deformation projection along the radar line of sight, LOS), are referred to a pixel located within the Napoli City harbour.
